Rental contracts, insurance terms, job offers, annual reports: nobody reads them, everybody signs them. These prompts get you the parts that matter in minutes, with page numbers so you can check.
Not legal or financial advice: for anything with real consequences, check the original and ask a professional.
#1. Upload it
- PDF straight into Claude or ChatGPT (both read long PDFs; very long ones may need to be split by chapter).
- Scans: make sure the text is selectable, or let the app read it as images.
- Put recurring documents (your contracts, your policies) into a Claude Project so you only upload once.
#2. The 3 core prompts
Is this document worth my time? Give me the 5 facts or numbers that matter most, each with the page number.Explain this document like I'm 15. What does it say, what do I agree to, what happens if I do nothing? What's in the fine print that could hurt me? List every deadline, fee, penalty, automatic renewal and thing I give up, each with the page number and a direct quote.#3. Five more, for everyday documents
Rental contract: list my obligations, the landlord's obligations, notice periods and every cost besides the rent. Mark anything unusual for my country.Insurance: what is NOT covered? List every exclusion and every condition I must meet for a claim to be paid, with page numbers.Job offer: compare salary, notice period, non-compete, overtime and holidays with what's normal for this role. What should I negotiate?App terms of service: what can they do with my data and my content? Can they change prices or terms without asking me? How do I cancel?Annual report: three things that went better, three that went worse, and the biggest risk management names. Page numbers for each.#4. The page-number check
AI can mix up numbers or invent a clause that sounds right. Always ask for the page and a quote, then open the page and read the sentence yourself. If it can't give you a page, don't trust it.
#5. Example: an IPO filing
I used these prompts on the IPO filing of Claude's own company (Anthropic, filed 26 Oct 2026). The 5 numbers that matter included revenue of $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion a year earlier, and more than 11,900 customers paying over $100,000 a year.
